Symphony conductor to audience: "Although your program's are wonderfully detailed about Holst, which I'm sure you can appreciate if you have bothered to open them, and for which I profoundly would like to thank [the second violinist] for her efforts there, I must, as always, get my two cents in."
Consternated woman one row behind me and to my right: "Yes, we know!"

Re: At a symphony at St. Paul's in Oakland this Sunday past
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 1:13 AMThe most amusing thing about the symphony, at least the San Francisco symphony, is that everyone holds in their coughs, throat-clearings, etc until there is a break between pieces, at which point everyone seems to break out into spontaneous tuberculosis. I'm fairly certain that some of the audience members would rather die of asphyxiation than commit the serious faux pas of uttering a sound whilst the musicians are performing.
If only people in movie theaters were half as polite! -

Re: At a symphony at St. Paul's in Oakland this Sunday past
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 5:12 PMThis reminded me of a speech competition I took students to this year. I insisted I stay in the room for all the presentations because I wanted to see what other students are doing for their coaches. I was told that was fine as long as I stayed and didn't disturb the process. There was talking and laughing among the high school contestants outside the door so loud, it was drowning out the kids inside. So between speakers, I poked my head out the door and found the culprit and told her we could hear everything she said. She gave me a dirty look.
So she was the last presenter and I was chewing on a diet bar and something in the bar went down the wrong pipe. I did everything I possibly could not to cough and I was doing really good, but the longer you hold that, the more energy is saved up. Suddenly I couldn't hold it and I burst out in this long loud line of choking, gasping, desperate coughing. It finally seemed to be over and I relaxed for like 60 seconds and it started again. I absolutely ruined her presentation. -
