My wacky mother in law is constantly mispronouncing People, places and things The latest was the up coming trip of her son and his family to the "Canine Islands" after much talk of their plans she paused with a puzzled look and said I don't know why they named it after a dog??

Sun, March 23, 2008 - 4:21 AMLaziness? Or dyslexia? I always wonder about the folks that do that.
Personally, I'm terrible with remembering folks names...but, um, I don't make up names when I can't remember their real name...my pop's does that...and it is very annoying...or, rather, he simply learns one name and then he assigns it to all of my friends...as if they are somehow interchangeable.

Re: Canine Islands???
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 7:15 PMShe's right, actually:
Canary Islands
The islands' name is likely derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning Island of the Dogs, a name applied originally only to the island of Gran Canaria. It is thought that the dense population of an endemic breed of large and fierce dogs, like the Canary Mastiff (in Spanish, el Presa Canario), was the characteristic that most struck the few ancient Romans who established contact with the islands by the sea.

Hearing is what made my mom a wacky Aunt because she'll TRY to make something different out of what she thinks you said.
I have to confess I did something similar recently when my 12YO son was telling me about this great game that was filled with "explosions and crap."
I responded, Ewww, explosions and CRAP?
Mom!
